Nature Tours

There are around 16 national parks, three strict natural reserves and three nature reserves in the island. Other than that, there are thousands of tanks where thousands of water fowls can be seen if you are a nature lover. You can easily plan your tour to observe them in the jungles in their natural habitats. If you are bird lover, Sri Lanka is a home for hundreds of birds species of local and migrating too. If you have interesting on birds let me know to include some tracking to your itinerary to observe more about them in your visit to Sri Lanka.

Sun Beach and sea

If you want to wonder in the beach under the stunning sun, Sri Lanka is the best place since it has been a tropical island. This small island gets the best tropical climate with bright sun throughout the year. Many beach locations with fine sand invite you to enjoy your thirsty of sun bath make end. Ideal sea water with temperature around 24Co throughout the year will make you comfortable with water sports and sea bath. If you let me know you’re interesting and number of days willing to spend in the beach, I can make your itinerary giving priority to the beach. I can make your preferable tour itinerary including, culture, nature and beach once you send me your interest and the number of days you are going to stay in Sri Lanka. You have two options to pay for the transport.
  1. As per the millage (kms) – according to the distance you travel with me in your whole tour.
  2. As per the number of days – according to the number of days you spend with my transport in your whole tour.

A tentative model itinerary prepared for 16 days for your reference as a guide line as follows,

Day01

Welcome to Sri Lanka! Upon arrival at Bandaranayke international Airport you will be met by (me) your guide for a private transfer to your hotel in Negombo (15kms / approx. 20minutes). Please note that standard check in time is 14:00.

Overnight at your preferable hotel in Negombo With selected meal plan.

Day02

Depart your hotel and drive to Anuradhapura via Puttalam. (190kms, approx. 4hrs).

Day03

Rise at 05:00am and enjoy a cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea or coffee before you depart on morning game drive to wilpattu national park at 05:30 (approx. 3hrs).   The biggest national park in Sri Lanka. The park is situated 15kms away from the hotel. Total area of the park is 131693 hectares. There are hundreds of villus or small natural lakes with press and brackish water as it mention by the name itself.

    Vegetation of the park, mainly littoral including salt grass, low scrub immediately adjacent to the beach. There is a coastal belt about 8 – 10 kms with monsoon forest and tall emergent. The animals we can see in the park are, Elephant, Leopard, Sloth Bear,     Spotted deer, crocodiles, eagles, and some waterfowls. Optional:- Evening game drives to the park again to find the missing animals from the morning run.

Day04

After breakfast, visit Anuradhapura ancient city (approx. 15minits).

                    Anuradhapura ancient city (15kms from the hotel approximately 10minits) is Sri Lanka’s First historical capital founded in 5th century BC by a king Called Pandukabhaya. It gives a fascinating glimpse of a stately well laid out pre-Christian metropolis of gigantic Buddhist shrines and monasteries, splendid palaces, pavilions, parks, bathing ponds and vast reservoirs. Many of them, masterpieces of architecture, art, sculpture and engineering of Sri Lankan people in olden age.

Day05

Depart your hotel and drive to Habarana. (65kms, approx. 1 and half hrs.).

In the evening enjoy a jeep safari at Minneriya national park to see the elephants. (Approx. 30 minutes).

The park is situated 20kms away from the hotel. The park is dominating by the ancient Minneriya tank, which was made in the 3rd Century AD by king Mahasen. The plains and forests of this park are home to herds of elephants that come to graze and to bathe in the tank’s water. Flocks of cormorants and painted storks, toque macaque and sambar deer may also be spotted. From March to August the park is a paradise for the big elephant herds and gathering. Depending of the movements of the elephants, you may visit the nearby kaudulla national park or echo park instead.

Day06

Set off this morning for sigiriya, also known as the ‘lion rock’ (25kms/Approx. 30minutes).

Sigiriya is a world heritage site and one of the major attractions in the country. A spectacular pillar of rock visible from miles around, geologically a hardened magma plug of an extinct volcano. Historically, the origins of the remains are disputed and it is thought to have been a royal fortress built under the reign of king Kashapa (477-495 AD) and a Buddhist monastery before.

          The walk to the top is steep with many uneven steps and the path or staircase is very narrow in parts with a handrail or fence to protect from a sheer drop.  I do not recommend this for those without a head for height or the less mobile. You will pass beautiful frescoes and a sheer ‘mirror wall’ before arriving to the massive stone lion’s paws which lend the rock it’s nick name ‘lion’s rock’. The summit covering an area of 1.6 hectares, originally completely covered by buildings, but only remains of the citadel can be seen today.  The hike up and down will take 1.5 to 2.5 hours depending on your fitness.

 

Optional:-  Village tour.

It is an activity designed for the visitors who interesting of looking for the day to day activities of rural village people with their traditional way of life. On the way you will experience of boat ride in an ancient tank, on a bullock cart and on a tree wheeler (tuk tuk).

Day07

Proceed this morning for Polonnaruwa ancient city (46kms/Approx. 01hrs).

The second most ancient city of the Sri Lanka’s kingdoms. Polonnaruwa was first declared by the king Vijayabahu 1 who defeated the cholar invaders came from south India in 1070 AD and re-united the country after many decades. Polonnaruwa became a thriving economical and religious center for three centauries reaching its zenith under the period of king Paracramabahu 1 in the 12th century AD. He created beautiful parks, huge buildings, and an enormous tank acted both as defensive and impotent water source for paddy cultivation.  

Today the archaeological park contains many well preserved ruins within a compact area. Start with a visit to the Polonnaruwa Museum where you can learn about the site more in details. You can continue tour visiting Royal palace complex, temple of the tooth relic complex, Hindu shrines, the massive stupa, Rankoth vehera ,Alahana pirivena monastery complex(world heritage site) and the rock temple with impressive colossal Buddha’s statues made in a living rock at the end.

Day08

Depart from the hotel this morning after the breakfast and proceed to Kandy with a stop to visit Dambulla cave temple en route (104kms / Approx. 03 hrs).

The Dambulla cave temple is another UNESCO world heritage site which date back to the 1st century BC. This amazing complex of five caves was first used as a refuge by an ancient king who upon regarding his throne commissioned magnificent images to be covered from the rock. Later kings made further improvements and the caves now contain over 150 images of the Buddha painted upon the walls. The hike up to the caves is short but steep (approx. 20 minutes)

 

After the temple you will continue to Kandy .You might like to stop en route at one of the spice garden at Mathale where you can learn more about the spice grow in Sri Lanka. One of the garden guides will take you to the garden and will explain the process how the herbs and spices grow and come as the final product to your hand. End of the tour he will take you to the shop where you may bay your needs according to your discretion.

 

Late afternoon you will head to a local hall to watch a show of traditional Sri Lankan music, dance and drumming. It will be of a one hour show with little noisy, but interesting. You will be issued a leaflet with an introduction to three types of Sri Lankan traditional dances.

Day09

Visit the temple of the tooth relic of Kandy locally name as ‘Daladha maligawa’ this morning after the breakfast (05kms/Approx.10 minutes, depending with the hotel).

The temple of the tooth relic of Kandy is also a UNESCO world heritage site with some colonial building coming from the 18th century. This temple is the most secret shrine for the Buddhists in the country.  Temple boasts intricate carvings and beautiful Sri Lankan art. During the evening ‘puja’ throngs of pilgrims visit the temple to line up for glimpse the golden casket said to hold the sacred relic and make offering of flowers.

After the temple you wonder through the city visiting beautiful kandy lake made during the latter part of the Kandien kingdom, colonial buildings including queens hotel, marvelous Peradeniya botanical garden. Kandy is the best place for you to do shopping if you want to buy some souvenirs, wood/braze/silver carvings, silks, batiks or even most valuable gem, blue sappier.

Day10

Today you will travel to the hill country through the green tea plantation. En route you can visit a tea plantation and a factory to see how the green leaves comes to your interesting tea cup. (82kms/Approx.2.5hrs).

          Nuwaraeliya city is located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s tea country at an elevation of 1900m, was a favored retreat of the British in the 19th century thanks to its cool climate. With an abundant of red and green roofed plantation bungalows, English country style homes, a fine 18 holes golf course and a racecourse, the town still has a decidedly British feel. The surrounding mountain slopes and valleys are carpeted with lush green tea plantation, interspersed with gushing streams and tumbling waterfalls. 

          Traveling with the train to the Nuwaraeliya also will be an interesting journey since it is very picturesque, passing many tea plantation and several waterfalls through tunnels among the hills.

Day11

Today you will visit the Nuwaraeliya city tour including Victorian post office, Vitoria children’s park, bustling market, holy trinity church, race course and Gregory lake.Rest of the day at leisure, enjoying the salubrious climate.Optional: – Visiting Horton plain national park.          Horton plain national park sits on Sri Lanka’s highest plateau at over 2100m above sea level in the central mountains and offers an astounding variety of scenery – from misty mountains to grasslands, from marshes to ice cold streams, lakes and waterfalls. The park home to many colorful butterflies, many species of birds and other animals including sambar deer, bear monkeys, barking deer, fishing cats, wild boar and very rare seeing of leopards.

On your 2-3 hour walk (Approx., 09kms) you might stop at Worlds end escarpment, where the plateau plunges almost 1000m in a sheer drop and at beautiful ‘bridal veil’ Bakers fall. This is a relatively easy hike but over uneven terrain with some steep sections. Better to wear sensible footwear and take adequate drinking water.

Drive back to hotel before the lunch and rest of the day at leisure.

Day12

Today you will travel to down south of the country towards Yala  (120kms/Approx.2.5hrs).

Rest of the day is at leisure.

Day13

Early in the morning enjoy a jeep safari at Yala national park.

The park is situated 05kms away from the hotel (depend with your hotel). You will leave your hotel around 0500 am since it take some time for the driver to take your entrance tickets waiting in a long queue.   Park is consisting with five blocks where only one block is open for the visitors.

After the morning safari, come back to the hotel and rest. Get ready for an evening game drive after the lunch.Rest of the day at leisure.

 

Day14

Today you will leave your hotel after the breakfast and travel to Galle (120kms/Approx.2.5hrs).

You will reach your beach hotel around lunch hours and may enjoy the sun, sea and the beach for two days.Optional: – Whales watching at Mirrissa.

          Sri Lanka is home to many types of whales around the island. Miriissa is the best place to see them in heard. The journey will be quite long with a passenger boat where get 50 – 60 people together and depart around 0600am for 3-4 hours depending with availability of the giants.

Today you will drive back to the airport for your onward flight back to the home.
